A star-gazer's guide to London theatre: famous actors on stage

There's something magical about London's live theatre especially if it means the chance to see celebrities on the West End. When there's the perfect symbiosis between sizzling script and super-hot star, we want to be in the front seats, watching – and, annoyingly, so does everyone else.

For a star safari, here's the shows to book fast, before the herds of superfans!

David Tennant to star in Good at the Harold Pinter Theatre

David Tennant's moral conundrom

Dr Who and Deadwater Fell star David Tennant returns to the stage to play a liberal professor who is swept along by Nazism in a revival of 1981 drama Good. As those lucky enough to see his Hamlet will remember, Tennant is mesmerising on stage.

Paul Mescal's violent turn

Paul Mescal of Normal People fame returns to the London stage for the first time since 2018 (and since becoming a certified heartthrob) to play the abusive Stanley Kowalski in Rebecca Frecknall's revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire at the Almeida Theatre. Mescal was last in London with Sean Holmes' revival of The Plough and the Stars at the Lyric Hammersmith, meaning this is the first chance many fans will have to see him in the flesh.

Juliet Stevenson: The Doctor West End transfer

Juliet Stevenson's medical masterpiece

After a sold out, five-star opening at the Almeida Theatre in summer 2019, The Doctor transfers to the West End's Duke of York's Theatre with Juliet Stevenson reprising her starring role. Stevenson is known by many for her screen work, including her Bafta-nominated performance in 1991 movie Truly, Madly, Deeply and 2022 comedy-drama Bend It Like Beckham, but the Olivier-winning actress cut her teeth on the London stage. Her leading performance in Robert Icke's The Doctor is a remarkable tour de force, not to be missed.

Emma Corrin's gender-bending jaunt through time

Emma Corrin's gender-bending jaunt through time

Emma Corrin (The Crown) takes the lead role in Neil Bartlett's new adaptation of Virginia Woolf's 1928 novel Orlando, which runs at the Garrick Theatre in the hands of The Michael Grandage Company. Corrin, who came out as non-binary in 2021, plays Orlando, who famously changes sex from a man to a woman and lives for centuries without ageing over 30. The star was last seen on the London stage in Anna X, Joseph Charlton’s 2021 play based on the story of Russian-born German fraudster Anna Sorokin, who moved to New York and brazenly reinvented herself as a wealthy German heiress.

Amelia Clarke swaps her dragons for a seagull

Dawn French and Julian Clary embrace Christmas panto

They're each a pot of comedy gold, but this Christmas, TV favourites Dawn French and Julian Clary are joining forces to star in a panto all about an elusive pot of gold (and some magic beans), as Jack and the Beanstalk comes to the London Palladium.

Erin Doherty leads a witch hunt

Erin Doherty leads a witch hunt

TV star Erin Doherty (The Crown, Chloe) plays the manipulative ring leader Abigail Williams in director Lyndsey Turner's fresh take on The Crucible, Arthur Miller's classic play about the witch hunts in Salem, running at the National Theatre this autumn. One of Doherty's greatest strengths is her diversity as a performer. While known for her screen roles as uppity Princess Anne in The Crown and wannabe 'It' girl Becky in Chloe, Doherty delivered a stunning performance in one-woman-show My Name is Rachel Corrie at the Young Vic in 2017. She'll no doubt captivate us again as she turns a town against its people.
