We know they can have us on the edge our seats and have our hearts pounding. But what is it exactly that makes thrillers thrilling?

To find out the answer to this question and more, head to the BFI Southbank for The Big Thrill – a day of talks, discussions and masterclasses on the dark genre.

Helping you to unlock the mysteries of the art of suspense will a strong line-up of its modern-day masters. This will include the writer and director behind BBC hit Apple Tree Yard and the producer of the nail-bitingly tense The Replacement who will be shining a spotlight on the new 'feminist' breed of thriller.

Abi Morgan, writer of the murderous series The Hour, will also be talking alongside prolific Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, the star of Morgan's detective drama River (who we recently had a chat with).

To wrap up the jam-packed day of events, the BFI will offering a sneak peek of upcoming thriller. We've already got goosebumps.
