Listening to jazz is full of moments of transport. You listen intently, your mind wanders, but then the music draws you back, carefully. It so often tells a story that you can tune in and out of, the way a tune might drift in and out of improvisation. In some ways, it's a mindful meditation.
Celebrating 100 years of recorded jazz, the musicians and the writers that enabled the greatest leap forward in popular music recording, The Arts Society and East London music dynamo, Kansas Smitty's present Jazz before Jazz: The pre-history of Jazz. Coming together for one night only to tell the phenomenal cultural and historical story of this much-loved art form, The Arts Society and East London music dynamo have organised a stellar line-up of talks, interactive workshops and live performances by some of the best young jazz musicians in the country.
But as with every great artistic movement, something came before it. The foundations of jazz have long been traced to the slave songs of American plantations, African polyrhythms, and the European classical tradition.

During the evening you will have the opportunity to listen to truly original craftsman including Andrew Oliver, one of London's leading ragtime and early jazz performers and Marcus Bonfanti, an in-demand performer at East-London nightspot for live jazz and swing, Kansas Smitty's.
