Sheridan Smith returns to the stage after impressing in Legally Blonde and Funny Girl to star as the Narrator in this new production of Joseph. Producers have also just announced that Jason Donovan will return to the production as Pharaoh, 28 years after he wowed audiences as the title character Joseph in the 1990s in a show which had a sold-out run and a best-selling soundtrack album.
The first collaboration of power duo Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be performed publicly, the show has established itself firmly as one of the world’s favourite family musicals and sees no end to its success. In its nearly five decades, the musical has taken the stage in hundreds of thousands of performances, from professional productions in the West End and on Broadway to amateur performances in school halls all around the world.
All song and no chat, the story – of biblical fame – follows the rollercoaster adventures of Joseph, the favourite son of Jacob. Sold into slavery by his envious brothers, Joseph manages to ingratiate himself with the Egyptian tycoon Potiphar, but ends up in prison after an unfortunate incident with Potiphar’s lustful wife. In prison, Joseph discovers he has a remarkable ability to interpret dreams; and when the troubled Pharaoh of Egypt hears of this, he calls upon Joseph to shed light on his enigmatic dreams and to resolve the famine that threatens the nation.
The London Palladium welcomes the new, re-imagined production for a strictly limited run in the summer. So go, go, go Joseph, you know what they say!
