Messiah, Academy of Ancient Music, Barbican

On 20 Dec 17, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Messiah is often sung and played by enormous forces, but smaller ensembles like this bring an electrifying directness and pace to the great oratorio

For many music-lovers, Christmas is not Christmas without Messiah, and of the many to choose from the London this year, this performance by the Academy of Ancient Music will take some beating.

With their historically accurate instruments and technique, this scintillating orchestra, conducted by Richard Egarr, will tell the life story of Christ, including the Nativity, with a dynamism that makes the familiar tale seem new.

With soloists including the crystalline soprano Mary Bevan and wonderfully expressive baritone Christopher Purves, this Messiah is an absolute must-do in the busy Christmas diary.

The dramatic narrative and commentary of the choir is sung by the Academy of Ancient Music Chorus.

Ticket-holders for Messiah can attend an illuminating talk before the concert, at the Barbican, at 6PM. And click here for Culture Whisper's guide to Messiah.
