The State, a highly anticipated four-part drama by award-winning director Peter Kosminksy, comes to Channel 4 this August.

The show tells the stories of Britons that travel to Syria to fight with ISIS. It promises to be exactly the kind of heavily-researched contemporary milieu that made Kosminsky famous; his previous success include The Government Inspector and Warriors, as well as his beloved dabble in historical drama, Wolf Hall.

Jalal (Sam Otto – Collateral) follows in his older brother’s footsteps and decides to travel to Syria and fight for ISIS. He persuades his best friend Ziyaad (Ryan McKen – Bancroft, NW) to accompany him.

Single mother Shakira (Ony Uhiara –Law and Order) arrives in Syria with her nine-year-old son Isaac, determined to use her skills as a junior doctor to the aid of the Islamic State; and, after being radicalised on the internet, teenager Ushna (Shavani Seth – Youngers, Homeland) has left her family behind to fulfil what she sees as her religious duty.

We expect big things from The State, which promises to be one of the most exciting TV shows in August.
