If you weren't excited enough about Rian Johnson directing the upcoming Star Wars movie, buckle in: Disney has announced that the director is also tackling a new Star Wars trilogy that is set to explore a never-before-seen corner of the galaxy far, far away.

As well as announcing their plans for three more films, Disney has revealed that a live-action Star Wars TV series is in the pipeline. Shrouded in mystery, all that we know so far is that the show will air late 2019 on Disney's currently unnamed streaming service.

Since Johnson's trilogy will tackle new Star Wars subject matter, it's likely that the TV series will follow suit, particularly as the Skywalker storylines have been so extensively explored already.

There's still a month to go until the release of Star Wars: the Last Jedi. Afterwards, fans can look forward to the Han Solo origin tale which will feature actor, comedian, and musician Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) as the young Lando and Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke (aka Daenerys Targaryen, aka Mother of Dragons) as a mysterious new character.

This instalment, due for release next year, will be followed by Episode IX with J.J. Abrams in the directing seat as he makes a return to the franchise.
