Rooftop Film Club 2018

Rooftop Film Club announces June programme filled with iconic film anniversaries, the latest blockbusters and indie throwbacks

Rooftop Film Club 2018
Rooftop Film Club started as a single rooftop in London’s Shoreditch in 2011 and has now expanded to three London venues and rooftops in LA, San Diego and New York City.

There's Bussey Building in Peckham Rye, a concrete industrial structure with magnificent views of central London from its three enormous roofs. Then there's Roof East in Stratford; it is a multifunction urban park, rooftop bar and now open-air cinema - formerly an empty rooftop car park frequented by grime artists to shoot videos on. The final one is the Queen of Hoxton rooftop terrace - now a celebrated and integral part of the Shoreditch skyline. This summer at QOH the theme is a futuristic Las Vegas, or ‘Lost Vegas’.

Some Like it Hot
(1959)
28th May 9pm - Queen of Hoxton

Marilyn Monroe’s role in this cemented her reputation as one of the most admired actresses in modern cinema. Set in 1929, after witnessing a Mafia murder, slick saxophone player Joe (Tony Curtis) and his long-suffering buddy, Jerry (Jack Lemmon), improvise a quick plan to escape from Chicago by disguising themselves as women and joining an all-female jazz band. Billy Wilder's 1959 comedy is one of the enduring treasures of the movies, a film of inspiration and meticulous craft.

Why you should go: Roger Ebert said this was a movie that's ‘about nothing but sex and yet pretends it's about crime and greed’. How fascinating.

Good Time (2017)
30th May 9pm - Queen of Hoxton

Good Time
guarantees exactly that, and as Robert Pattinson sheds the last of his heartthrob status and falls in an unrecognisable and complex role. The Safdie brothers have crafted a super-charged thriller that thrives on unpredictability and left-field turns.

Why you should go: It’s a full headlong plunge into the New York night, and it shows that finally – finally! – someone has found a proper use for Robert Pattinson.

Lion King (1994)
23rd June - Roof East Stratford

This film needs no justification to be on any ‘Best of’ list.

Why you should go: To see an anthropomorphic Hamlet, or because Jon Favreau’s live-action Lion King is coming to cinemas next year, starring man of the moment Donald Glover as Simba and woman of the century Beyoncé as Nala.
