The Sony World Photography Awards is the largest and most diverse photography competition in the world. 2019 will see more than 800 images go on display from a global selection of photographers falling into four categories: professional, open, youth and student. The competition was particularly fierce this year with judges receiving over 326,000 entries and the final selection will include everything from portraiture and wildlife to fine art and street photography.

This year's recipient of the prize for Outstanding Contribution to Photography goes to industry heavyweight Nadav Kander, whose diverse career has seen him capture iconic portraits of actors, athletes and political leaders in addition to pursuing projects in China, Ukraine and America. No matter the subject, Kander's style is instantly recognisable by its muted palette and eerie quiet.

In addition to the main exhibition, there will be a display of works by the 2018 recipients of the Professional and Student Grants, as well as images by winners and runners up of the ZEISS Photography Award.

Culture Whisper is offering free pairs of tickets to Gold Whisper members to visit the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London. We are also offering our readers 20% off tickets with the promo code WHISPER19. Book your tickets here

  • Jidori, Covent Garden

Jidori is London’s major yakitori restaurant, a popular type of eatery in Japan where the menu consists of one main dish: chicken skewers. Here you can sample a wide range of these Japanese-style kebabs and more to get a flavour of authentic Japanese street food. The tsukune minced chicken skewer and katsu curry scotch egg are particular favourites of ours.

  • Roka, Aldwych

There are four Rokas around London – Mayfair, Aldwych, Canary Wharf, and Fitzrovia – and each one provides a dark urbane corner for some of the best (if most expensive) Japanese food in London.

  • Beaufort Bar at The Savoy

Nothing quite matches the glamour of The Savoy. One of the most famous hotels in London and located on the vibrant Strand, The Savoy is home to a range of luxurious restaurants and bars. Beaufort Bar is a particular favourite of ours, not only because of its trademark cocktails but because of its colourful history. The bar itself was once a cabaret stage used by the likes of George Gershwin and Carol Gibbons, and the menu, inspired by the many famous faces that have graced the halls of The Savoy, takes you on a journey back in time.
