Things to do

London's best new restaurants this April

By CW Contributor on 30/3/2017

April's a month for returners, as the trio behind bao are back with a fresh take on Taiwanese cuisine, and Michelin-starred Tamarind of Mayfair are now in Soho, in a 'fast-casual' setting...

Elsewhere, we've got a spring in our step as healthy eatery Maple & Kings open a follow-up too.

Here's to experimentation...

The British One: Lupins, Flat Iron Square, Borough

The British One: Lupins, Flat Iron Square, Borough

What's the scoop? The food at this latest addition to Flat Iron Square is British-themed, but hero ingredients from other continents will give traditional dishes unexpected lifts.

Why go? To get to know the new Flat Iron Square food hub, which Lupins is a part of.

The Seasonal One: Scout by Matt Whiley, cocktail bar, Shoreditch

What's the scoop? Matt Whiley is famous for being one of London's most innovative mixologists. He has curated the drinks menus at famous London restaurants like Fera at Claridge's, Bone Daddies and Hoppers.

Why go? Influenced by the way restaurants change their menus with the seasons, Scout's cocktails are inspired by - and include - only fresh produce.

The Wine One: Comptoir Cafe and Wine, Mayfair

What's the scoop? Some may call this a follow-up to Blandford Comptoir, London's most important wine opening of 2016.

Why go? Xavier Rousset can do no wrong. Evening Standard restaurant writer Fay Maschler put Blandford Comptoir in her best London restaurants of 2016, and Cabotte, in the City, is still pulling in acclaim.

What's the scoop? Adria Wu quit her corporate job in 2014 to learn to cook with great finesse; she opened the first widely acclaimed Maple & Fitz in 2015. Now she's back with a second helping.

Why go? The juice and veggie smoothies boast particular strengths: some boost the metabolism, while others are geared towards boosting immunity.

XU restaurant, Soho

What's the scoop? Xu marks a new era for Taiwanese food. London trend-setting trio and Xu owners Tat Chung, Wai Ting Chung and Erchen Chang opened Bao in 2015, and now they're returning with a more diverse restaurant.

Why go? Rather than the simple bao bun, Xu celebrates the rich culinary diversity of Taiwan with a wide-ranging menu in an a La Carte style.

Jean George Vongerichten will return to London this spring

Jean Georges at The Connaught, Mayfair

What's the scoop? As chefs go, Jean Georges Vongerichten has had some pretty exceptional success. His eponymous Jean George in New York is one of only seven restaurants in the world to be thrice Michelin starred - so it's odd that his name is still relatively niche.

Why go? To dine in the spectacular conservatory at the Connaught Hotel - the famous Mayfair sight that houses this new restaurant.

What's the scoop? Michelin-starred restaurant Tamarind of Mayfair is getting a follow-up this month that’ll serve equally fine food but in a fast-casual setting.

Why go? For Michelin-quality food on your terms. (No reservations, and designed for drop-ins).
