Lethal Weapon, ITV

A remake of the 1987 film starring Mel Gibson comes to ITV this week: an American cop series with masses of banter

Lethal Weapon, ITV Friday 3 March
At first glance, Lethal Weapon, the American cop series coming to ITV this week, is a remake of the 1987 Mel Gibson/Danny Glover buddy movie which spawned three sequels.

Meet unhinged cop Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford), who moves Los Angeles after the death of his wife, and finds himself paired with the risk-averse Roger Murtagh (Damon Wayans), a veteran detective approaching retirement and trying to keep away from stress.

As in the 1980s version, the unhappy couple are assigned a case that looks like suicide but proves to be murder, but then the TV plot deviates. Expect lashings of banter and a personal chemistry simmering with tension.

Our only worry is that the black-white double act of the 1980s films has been imitated many times since then, setting the bar high and making it hard for the squabbling and jokes to seem fresh. But cop drama lovers should be in for a treat, nonetheless.
