Titans of the stage Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr, former artistic director and executive director of the National Theatre, have put together a team of formidable talents to launch their new project, an ambitious, purpose-built 900-seat performance space in SE1's One London Bridge development.
The Bridge Theatre opens on 18 October with a new comedy by Richard Bean, directed by Hytner. Thanks to the critical and commercial success of first One Man, Two Guvnors (2012) then Great Britain (2014), Bean was one of the brightest stars of Hytner's National Theatre. So there's a good, strong pedigree for this next collaboration, one which reunites the creative team behind One Man, Two Guvnors.
Young Marx is the semi-true story of Karl Marx when he was a young 'broke, restless and horny' revolutionary hiding away in Soho. Rory Kinnear, whose recent appearances at the Young Vic and National Theatre cemented his reputation as one of our most versatile stage talents, is confirmed to play Marx alongside Oliver Chris as Engels.
Against a backdrop of mounting chaos – deadlines, spies, debtors and wannabe seducers – the two go on a drunken night out to tear up Soho. Expect a spirited, sharp comedy which, if it lives up to the sum of its parts, is likely to be a smash hit.
