Journey to the underworld, Funicular Productions

Immersive storytelling meets fine dining

All aboard for your journey to the underworld
All aboard for a journey through fantasy, fear, danger and love. Immersive storytelling and dining merge in an underground railway carriage as passengers embark upon a trip to the underworld. Funicular, a collective specialising immersive experiences, invite you to dine on board their train for a twisted fairytale this Halloween. Your very last meal on earth will be one to remember – a feast curated and cooked by 2017 Masterchef The Professionals finalist Louisa Ellis.

Guests will join Claude, the shackled conductor, and his meek assistant Gordy on a quest for redemption and eternal love that will take them deep into the land of the dead. Along the way, guests will do their best to outwit the seductive Gatekeeper, the hunched Harbinger, and the demonic Dark One, all the while praying that this isn't a one-way ticket.

The experience will see you hurtle down a narrowing tunnel towards the Underworld – with creepy messages appearing, as if my magic, on the train carriage windows as you ride – you will encounter mysterious figures and spine-chilling demons. The carriage is pimped out with LED and period lighting, smoke and haze machines, and surround sound to provide a truly immersive experience. While some of the scenes acted out seem uninspired (power phrases and explosive encounters with little or no story arch and build up), the three-course menu served is exquisite; a spoonful of garlicky butternut squash volute is followed by a plate of black garlic gnocchi (no vampires here, please). A main of pan-seared guinea fowl breast with anna potato is everything a gourmet and hearty roast should be. And a chocolate ganache with a honey ice cream and crisp sweetens the whole evening up.

Expect queues at the bar as thirsty punters swarm to make the most of the Seven Deadly Sin-themed cocktails included in the ticket price, but thankfully a hooded figure is on hand to top up your complimentary glass of prosecco while you wait. Between the unusual decor, special effects and delicious cuisine, this is an immersive halloween event to die for.
