The 8 female artists to know now
In this world of mass production, big brands, CGI and 3D printing, creativity is, shall we say, losing its personal touch.
But Clerkenwell Design Week, the design festival celebrating exceptional craftsmanship from around the world, has, thankfully, shaken things up a little. This year's programme is a 'journey-of-discovery', curated not around price point but around substance – taking into account, above all, the underlying skills, connoisseurship and innovation of independent makers working across the creative industry today.
In celebration of such a brilliant initiative, we've scouted out the outstanding female artists, designers and makers you should have on your radar.
Alex Eagle's name might sound familiar: she is the woman behind the ultra chic Soho boutique The Store – a retail-cum-concept space with outposts in Berlin – Creative Director of Soho Famhouse's onsite shop, and the brains behind the super hyped #SheInspiresMe Car Boot Sale. With all profits going to Women for Women International – a charity helping female survivors of war – Eagle has truly made shopping for a good cause her own.
Eagle made her name in retail as creative director of Joseph. Now head of the Alex Eagle brand, she is determined to reinvent the luxury shopping experience. With an eclectic mix of artworks, jewellery, furniture, ceramics and clothes in The Store, browsing Eagle's beautifully curated selection becomes an all encompassing aesthetic experience. Eagle, and as an extension her empire, caters to the new-gen collector interested in a little bit of everything. With impeccable taste, an ability to juggle work-life balance with seamless ease, and kick-ass motivation levels to boot, she is a mortal incarnation of Wonder Woman. We may have actually fallen in love.
