Exploring the extraordinary range of colours possible when two violins, a viola and cello sit down together, Phaedra combines tradition, technology and experimentation.
And while the quartet is at the heart of its music-making, collaborators and composers stretch the repertoire to reach far-flung musical and artistic fields, from electronica, to jazz, dance, and the visual arts.
At VOX:06 (5 July) at Juju's Bar & Stage, Truman Brewery, Shoreditch, you can hear world premieres of a new acoustic arrangement of Laurie Anderson's iconic O Superman alongside Neil Luck's Phantasy, written for solo violin (Chihiro Ono) and pre-recorded vocals by Vocaloid software Hatune Miku.
On the same evening there is a new commission by Antonia Barnett McIntosh, and a performance of Kevin Volans's String Quartet No 5, Dancers on a Plane. Originally written and recorded as the soundtrack to Deborah Amy’s documentary Plane-song, this concert version of Volans's piece brings acoustic string quartet together with taped recordings of natural found sounds from the composer's former homeland of South Africa.
Switched-on as well as intensely musical, Phaedra will also give Jamie Hamilton's ever-changing commentary on American society, 47 Short Texts About America. (What, only 47?!)
An exceptional evening of cool music, hot topics and soundworlds full of surprises, VOX:06 feels like an event to catch.
