Beauty Trends 2023

Come hither make-up

Skin minimalism and no-make-up-make-up are out. According to Beauty Pie's new data, 'coquette make-up' has seen popularity increase by 1,690%, with doe-eye make-up increasing by 122% and lip stains up 53%. All of these trends equate to one thing: it's not just Justin that's bringing sexy back – so are the make-up and fashion brands. The fashion search engine Tagwalk reports that over the most recent round of fashion weeks, 59% of collections included visible lingerie. And what are you going to wear with that? Flirty, come-hither make-up. So, stock up now. Lashes are essential: we love Stila's Stay All Day Mascara, £20; it gives you lashes that look luscious, long, thick and glossy and also stay the distance. No running down your face, no panda eyes – no matter how (ahem) sweaty one gets.

Animal instincts for hair

We've seen the wolf cut, butterfly, octopus and jellyfish hairstyles gaining popularity in 2022, and they will prevail. After all, they are just ultra-flattering face-framing layers – think 70s shag meets a more glamorous mullet shape – that looks sexy and dishevelled – but still pretty too.
TRY: Ouai Wave Spray, £24

The top five searched looks:

1. Butterfly haircut: 12,432%
2. Octopus haircut: 6,104%
3. Jellyfish haircut: 1,185%
4. Spiky bun: 257%
5. Wolf cut: 135%

The only one to ditch? The 'jellyfish'. Like the creatures themselves – we would steer clear of this one, as the sting in the tail (or tentacle) is that the bulbous round steep cut into your hair will take you until 2024 to grow out. You can blame TikTok for that one. For more exciting and reliable TikTok trends to try – click here.

Metaverse rowing

Launching at the end of January, ImersU ROW is a new immersive rowing game designed by rowers, gamers and creators. It's designed to help you enjoy rowing without dipping a toe into the murky waters of the Thames. So what better way to shape the nine muscle groups – that's a whopping 86% of your body's muscles from the upper, lower and core – without braving freezing temperatures? And with Olympian rower Tom George as the brand ambassador, our interest has suddenly been piqued even more.

Psychedelics are on the rise

We've all seen Goop-y Gwynnie talking about psychedelics, along with Silicon Valley types going to find themselves, usually in a semi-remote five-star jungle setting, with some chanting and mushroom use. However, it's coming to a spa near(er) to us here in the UK.

According to Mark Smith, founder of The Spa Man blog and deputy editor of European Spa Magazine: 'There is growing interest in psychedelic retreats as consumers hear about the clinical trials offering hope for people with depression, anxiety and even post-traumatic stress disorder.'

So, what should you be looking out for? Smith says, 'Psilocybin, a naturally occurring psychedelic prodrug compound produced by more than 200 species of fungi, is the main ingredient to offer benefits. It is illegal in many countries and only available in limited medical circumstances. However, the list of countries where you can join a healing retreat offering psilocybin is growing and includes the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, USA, Jamaica and Mexico.

'Retreats generally deliver the drug via tea or tinctures and require (sometimes rigorous) pre- and post-visit preparation. These take a psychological approach to healing the mind and are supported by counsellors and, in some cases, psychologists and psychiatrists. There is also growing interest in the use of ketamine and MDMA. We are only at the beginning of what has the potential to be game-changing for wellness tourism.'

The popularity of CBD also continues, and in 2023 is getting more scientific and eco. Zoetic is a leading pioneer in hemp cultivation, and sustainable farming, Zoetic's skincare range has been enhanced with CBD to stimulate our skin's cannabinoid receptors and target common skin problems. Instead of reaching the bloodstream, the skin's protective surface absorbs the CBD oil, interacting with cannabinoid receptors to treat and protect the epidermis, making Zoetic's CBD safe to apply topically. Our body also benefits – CBD oil relieves physical aches and pains effectively and naturally. In addition, Zoetic's anti-ageing and anti-fatigue collections help target fine lines, wrinkles, and tired skin, alleviating joint pain and keeping skin hydrated.
CBD Facial Drops 30ml, £20 – Cannabidiol from hemp extract 750mg. You can add these into your existing skincare creams and serums for a CBD boost.

Preppy hair accessories

The Sloane style is back – with a 4,200% uplift for 'preppy hair accessories' in Google searches.

Brenda Lee Intignano, a trends writer from Cliphair, has reported 749,200 views on TikTok; the preppy girl hair aesthetic has grown in popularity since autumn and is set to dominate in 2023. As seen on the likes of Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid and Keke Palmer, the secret to the preppy look à la Blair Waldorf is accessories. Hair bows tying up softly curled ponytails, ribbon headbands paired with lengthy, sleek hair hanging down, and pearl-encrusted hair clips placed perfectly yet effortlessly on the side are just a few of the perfect ways to quickly prep up a day-to-day look. Plus they easily hide bad hair days or hat hair.

Next-level veganism

Juliet Kinsman, a sustainable luxury travel writer and broadcaster, founder of bouteco.co and sustainability editor at Condé Nast Traveller, highlights the rise of the vegan in the travel and food sectors. She says:

'Vegetarian and vegan food sales are up 50% globally, and Google searches for "vegan food near me" spiked by more than 5,000% since 2021, according to The Vegan Society.

'Why is this so significant? Food production accounts for more than a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions. If the carnivores among us acted more like "climavores" or "climatarians" and swapped 20% of their beef for plant protein alternatives, we would halve deforestation rates by 2050. So the more of us eating and drinking fewer animal-origin goods, the better for the planet.

'It's not just about what's on the menu, though. Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi has announced vegan suites created without the use of animal products. At the same time, Saorsa 1875, an 11-room country-house hotel on the edge of Scotland's Cairngorms National Park, is Britain's first vegan hotel, with furnishings and menus free of animal-based materials.'

With this mantra in mind – and Veganuary on the cards – we are super-excited to see the launch of The Edit. The 'root-to-fruit', zero-waste dishes plant-based fine-dining restaurant with a commitment to sustainability is opening in Hackney in January 2023.

Sustainable formula solutions

'Suppliers for ingredients are working on reducing their carbon footprint, becoming B-Corp registered and improving their sustainability', reveals Faith in Nature. Also, according to Sophie Lowe, Brand Manager for We Are Concentrate, beauty is an industry that laps up the most water after agriculture. She says, 'We Are Concentrate built its brand to help consumers monitor their water footprint. We use an in-house manufacturing method called a "closed loop water system" which is proven more sustainable than other manufacturing methods. This has also led many brands to seek innovative solutions and make savvy ingredient swaps within their formulations to help combat the sustainability crisis.'

Alex Oprey, marketing director at our favourite perfumery brand, Miller Harris, adds, 'Upcycled ingredients are on the rise. We are developing a new EDP for next year, which will be the first in our range to incorporate Hydrolat water – a by-product of essential oil production.' A more eco-friendly spritz sounds good to us.

New products for 2023

Heights Smart Probiotic

Heights will launch its new Smart Probiotic in January 2023, containing seven of the most studied strains in the world, including CEREBIOME® – the first probiotic clinically proven to support your mood and stress response alongside your gut health.

It's the world's most researched strain of probiotics, psychobiotics, and beneficial yeast, backed by over 380 clinical studies demonstrating the efficacy of its strains. The first to target both the gut microbiome and the gut-brain axis, it supports the digestive system and improves cognitive function related to mood, anxiety, sleep, and stress levels, while contributing to the all-around brain and immune health, all in just one daily capsule.

The gut is responsible for digestion and houses the enteric nervous system; 95% of the body's serotonin, and almost half of its dopamine, is produced in the gut. They're connected physically by the vagus nerve and chemically through neurotransmitters running from the brain to the gut and the other way. On top of that, 70% of the immune system is located in the gut, where the diverse bacteria provide your first line of defence.

Third-party studies showed the Smart Probiotic contained 200 times more live bacteria than best-selling over-the-counter probiotics. The bacteria in probiotics will only benefit your health if they reach your gut alive. Thanks to Heights' intelligent capsule technology, the unique formula has incorporated delayed-release technology and acid-resistant strains to guarantee the 20 billion CFUs in each dose make it to the large intestine, where they can deliver the most significant impact.

3D nail art

Nail art will be all about texture and dimension for 2023. Think diamond-encrusted accents, patterns that replicate your favourite clothes, stickers, nail jewels and gemstones. Anything goes; have fun with it. Previously we have seen longer nail shapes adopt this style, but for 2023, the trend will skew towards a shorter nail length with a square and oval finish. This trend will work with any single nail shade, but try a strong contrast, such as black against silver and gold embellishments, for the wow factor. Mylee has a fun range of nail art, foils, stickers and more.
