The Nightingales, West End transfer

New drama from Gavin and Stacey's Ruth Jones. The Nightingales will transfer to London after impressing at Theatre Royal Bath

Ruth Jones in The Nightingales
Fans of Gavin and Stacey are in for a treat. Ruth Jones is returning to the stage for the first time for over ten years, in a West End transfer of new play The Nightingales. A village acapella group, united by long friendship and love of music, are given the opportunity to make a name for themselves when newbie Maggie (Ruth Jones) comes calling. She raises the stakes by entering them for a singing competition that feeds Britain’s Got Talent, and what was once a joyful hobby becomes a crucible of competition. Friendships are tested and community spirit is placed under threat, resulting in consequences none had foreseen.

The show sees a welcome return for Jones. As ambitious single-mum Maggie she combines her Welsh lilt and earthy, forceful persona (comfortingly echoing her role as Stacey's sidekick Nessa) with a more subtle strand, as she gently manipulates the group into going along with her scheme. Opportunities for comedy will abound in her capable hands, with the show receiving very good reviews since its opening in Bath last year, Jones singled out for her arresting portrayal.

This new play from upcoming writer William Gaminara explores the dramas unleashed in small rural communities, which Gaminara has plenty of experience of as a regular performer in Radio 4's The Archers. With experienced director and RSC Associate Artist Christopher Luscombe at the helm, Gaminara uses his play to explore the corrupting power of fame.

We look forward to seeing what havoc Jones will cause in this quiet country setting.
