Ever since the pioneering events company Gingerline began inviting foodies to meet them at secret locations on the Overground (Ginger) Line, London has been hooked. They are to food what Punchdrunk are to theatre, and the appetite for immersive dining shows no sign of abating. Chambers of Flavour V3 is the third instalment of a three-part series curated by a bespoke collection of designers, performers, chefs and technicians.

We visited the weird and wonderful event, and while our lips remain firmly sealed as to the exact details of what the Chambers of Flavour held within their mischievous cloak of secrecy, we can give you a spoiler-free review.

On the day of our booking, we received a text message detailing instructions on how to get to the classified location – which was a short walk from an East London Overground station, somewhere between Highbury & Islington & Crystal Palace. Having pre-ordered our drinks at the welcome bar to be supplied along the way – guests are given one welcome cocktail – phones and cameras were no longer permitted once we exited the outer-chamber into the inner ones.

Throughout each stage of our two-hour and twenty minute adventure, we were served a corresponding dish – seven mind-boggling chambers, six inventive courses. Along our way we met troupes of joyous house-actors, were thrust into parallel dimensions and played witness to absurdity aplenty.

While we wouldn’t recommend the experience to those who expect discerning theatre or fine-dining (or picky eaters), the pioneering nature of this event – and the tangible excitement surrounding it – makes for an authentically fun experience for those who enjoy getting their hands dirty for a good jolly-up.

Please note that this experience is not suitable for people who do not like small spaces or have serious food allergies. Over 18s only. Terms and conditions apply.
