New to Netflix UK: February 2023
From trashy serial killer drama You with Charlotte Ritchie to Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher starring in the romcom Your Place or Mine?, Netflix in February provides many entertaining options
UK Netflix release date: Thursday 9 February
Netflix’s favourite serial killer comes to London!
As with every season of Greg
Berlanti and Sera Gamble’s trashy thriller You, the central antihero Joe
(Penn Badgley) remakes himself into a different personality. Following the
fiery conclusion to season three, he’s changed into an
established lecturer in the Big Smoke. Among the British elite, Joe is thrust into a Traitors-like scenario with a supposed murderer in a country
estate – turning from predator to prey. Charlotte
Ritchie also stars.
The Strays
UK Netflix release date: Wednesday 22 February
There are some serious Get Out vibes around Nathaniel Martello-White's debut feature film The Strays, which plunges into the darkness of middle-class suburban Britain.
Neve (Ashley Madekwe) is the deputy head of a private
school in the country, living with her family in a perfect rural setting. But
with a Lynchian sense of unease, something’s not quite right. Two shadows from
Neve’s past interrupt and dismantle the comfy life that Neve has built for
herself. Also stars the Bafta-winning Rocks actor Bukky Bakray.
We Have a Ghost
UK Netflix release date: Friday 24 February
Christopher Landon’s contemporary ghost film boasts not one, but two delights from modern television. Firstly, there's David Harbour from Stranger Things playing Ernest, a silent but friendly phantom that lingers in the attic of a family home. And then there’s Jennifer Coolidge (the unforgettable star of The White Lotus) as a medium who attempts to communicate with the dead.
But this isn’t Poltergeist
or The Conjuring – We Have a Ghost is a comedy. Once the family realise that this non-threatening ghost is floating around, they attempt to make money and social media attention from his existence.
Anthony Mackie also stars.
Girls5Eva, seasons 1–2
UK Netflix release date: Wednesday 1 February
Maybe
it’s all the current troubles in the world with a predictable apocalypse approaching,
but nostalgia for the nineties and noughties is becoming more
appealing. You sense some of that in Girls5Eva, Meredith Scardino’s pop music sitcom about a one-hit-wonder girl group that fizzled out in 2001.
Twenty years later, the
four surviving members – preoccupied with dentistry, parenthood and Instagram – decide to reunite on their own terms. Their former manager
was exploitative and problematic, but now they’re back with a vengeance.
Your Place Or Mine
UK Netflix release date: Friday 10 February
Just in time for Valentine’s Day: a friends-to-lovers romance starring Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. In Your Place or Mine, besties Debbie (Witherspoon) and Peter (Kutcher) continue their long-distance friendship from opposite sides of the country. She loves her parental routine in LA and he thrives in the flux of New York.
When Debbie finds a dream opportunity in NYC, Peter
offers to swap locations to look after her son, Jack (Wesley Kimmel), while she stays at his place. But in doing so, romantic secrets begin to unravel.
