Set against the backdrop of the Labour Party's decline in the north of England, the family epic charts working-class life over three generations from 1965 to 2019. Future dreams clash with the ghostly reminders of past nightmares as family conflict grows. Stage and screen star Anne-Marie Duff, most recently in His Dark Materials and Sex Education, returns to the Almeida after an impressive performance in 2018's Oil. She leads the cast as Constance Webster, who is like a spider weaving a web at the centre of the family.
Having explored the miners' strike in celebrated 2014 play Wonderland, Beth Steel is well versed in large-scale productions and the social and political upheavals of British workers. Blanche McIntyre (The Writer, Almeida Theatre) directs this family saga.
