The Mandrake, Fitzrovia

The Mandrake, which opened its doors in 2017, is an independent property which professes to be hipper than hip. With 30 guest rooms decorated in six different styles across four floors, The Mandrake is one of London's most intriguing hotels. Apparently it's inspired by the medicinal properties of the mandrake plant; it appears to give a nod to its hallucinogenic effects, too. The hotel is home to the Waeska bar, which offers plant-inspired cocktails, and the first international venture from the Michelin-starred Hong Kong restaurant: Serge et le Phoque. The head chef, Frédéric Peneau, has infused his Spanish and French heritage into a selection of beautifully presented tapas style sharing dishes.

While the sumptuous bedroom interiors, surrealist designed suites, critically-acclaimed restaurant, and central greenhouse full of exotic plants have got people talking, the formidable art collection has got collectors, dealers and artists around the world swinging from the rooftops. The hotel hosts a rotating Artist-in-Residence programme that welcomes creatives to work from the premises. Hollywood tattoo artist, Mark Mahoney, recently set up shop, allowing guests to see into his recreated parlour from the hotel lobby.
