Severe, cerebral and conceptually rigorous, German artist Thomas Ruff has been experimenting with photography for almost four decades. Resoundingly neutral, he creates dispassionate images: the results are similar whether he is working with found photographs or shooting his own. He employs a variety techniques: analogue and digital exposures alongside computer generated imagery and images from newspapers, magazines, and the internet.

This winter, the Düsseldorf-based artist comes to Mayfair's David Zwirner gallery for a new exhibition, Thomas Ruff: New Works. The images are from a series press++, sourced from clippings from American newspapers, span decades.

They are typically American: cars, highways, razzle-dazzle Hollywood stars, advertising campaigns, rocket launches. They are photocopied, layered with smudges, cropping, commentary, and retouching. The show continues Ruff’s long-standing interest in the deconstruction of the image and the new structures of photography following digital technology. "I think photography is still the most influential medium in the world, and I have to deconstruct these conventions,” he says.

Come and discover Ruff's intellectual, supremely satisfying work this winter.
