In this age of endless selfies we are scrutinising our own image more than ever. Inevitably we put pictures out into the world that don’t reflect reality as we strive for the perfect angle, the best light and the most flattering filter and this cult of self-promotion has not gone unnoticed by contemporary photographers. Historically, of course, artists have been the most adept at cultivating their own image.

Th self-portrait is put under the spotlight once again in The Camouflaged Beauty of Fashion, an exhibition presented by the Cynthia Corbett Gallery which features the work of Isabelle van Zeijl. The Dutch artist is the latest photographer to challenge our ideas of self-representation and beauty, by combining fashion, fantasy and art history in her work, putting a contemporary twist on the traditional portrait. To do this she uses models for, styles and edits every shot herself. Often she appears naked, wearing elaborate headpieces that echo those worn in the paintings of the old masters, but expands them to gargantuan proportions with flowers, hair or swathes of lace.

Van Zeijl has worked with a number of fashion designers, such as Iris van Herpen, Claes Iversen and Jan Taminiau and her work has appeared in Harpers Bazaar. From 24 June you can see her latest exhibition at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery on Pall Mall.
