A non-musical adaptation of the Victor Hugo's classic Les Miserables, starring Lily Collins and Olivia Coleman, comes to the BBC this Christmas. Here's everything we know

Lily Collins in Les Miserables, BBC
'I dreamed a dream in times gone by!' And so it is that the BBC will do its best to make our dreams come true: by bringing Victor Hugo's Les Miserables onto our TVs with an all-star cast. Although be warned: there's no chance of enjoying that song, or any others – the new series is strictly non-musical.

Who's in the cast of Les Miserables?

Writer Andrew Davies's adaptation unites an astounding cast that includes Dominic West (War and Peace) as Jean Valjean, Lily Collins (To the Bone) as Fantine and David Oyelowo (Gringo) as Javert. They will be joined by Bafta winning actress Olivia Colman as Madame Thenardier, who will also be lending her voice in Watership Down this Christmas.

Collins said of her upcoming role in the 19th Century classic: 'I'm so thrilled to be playing Fantine. Andrew's wonderful dramatisation opens up the character in fresh ways that I've never seen before in previous adaptations.'

Davies said: 'This is such an intense and gut-wrenching story and I am delighted that this esteemed ensemble of actors will be bringing it to life.'

What's the Les Miserables release date?

An exact release date hasn't yet been announced, but it's definitely airing on BBC One at some point this Christmas.
