Under Her Eye: Women and Climate Change Summit and Arts Festival, British Library
It’s time to look at climate change from a new perspective. Environmental issues are increasingly being thought of as equality issues: statistically women are the worst affected by climate change and more proactive than men when it comes to protecting the planet. That’s why women from around the world are coming to London to take action.
The Under Her Eye festival explores climate change through the female gaze. Curated by Invisible Dust, the two-day event will include lectures and panel discussions by high-profile environmental activists as well public art installations and workshops.
Gayle Chong Kwan's At the Crossroads
Margret Atwood, Booker-prize winner, headlines the event: her speculative fiction or ‘Cli-Fi’ (The Handmaid’s Tale ) is often concerned with the intersection between gender and the environment. The festival will bring together pioneering women in all kinds of fields to discuss environmental challenges and spark change. Other big names include Caroline Lucas, co-leader of the Green Party and Hakima El Haité, Moroccan Minister for the Environment.
The second day of the festival considers climate change through the arts – the area around King’s Cross will host public performances, installations and film screenings. Environmental issues will be explored through the lens of the air, land and sea. Some of the work has been specially commissioned for the festival: look out for Gayle Chong Kwan’s At the Crossroads, a multi-sensory experience and banquet that explores the environment through food.
Under Her Eye seeks to start crucial conversations and to change the agenda on climate change.
