Hillary Rodham Clinton & Chelsea Clinton: The Book of Gutsy Women

Hillary Rodham Clinton and her daughter Chelsea Clinton come to London to discuss gutsy women and feminist resilience

American Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton knows a thing or two about resilience. Her rise from First Lady to the first woman to run for president for either of America's major political parties provoked plenty of backlash.

But she faced 'Crooked Hillary', jibes about the 'Nasty Woman' and scrutiny of every haircut and outfit choice with courage. And when Trump won the 2016 election, Clinton used her concession speech to elevate the next generation of women, telling little girls around the world that they are 'valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance'.

Now Clinton has teamed up with her daughter Chelsea for The Book of Gutsy Women, which shares stories of the overlooked women who have achieved extraordinary things. This autumn the Clinton women come to London's Southbank Centre for an exclusive talk celebrating courage and resilience throughout history. They will be joined by homegrown feminist provocateur Professor Mary Beard, who will chair the discussion.

The book features more than 100 women who have changed the world: from 16-year-old eco-warrier Greta Thunberg to the American Civil War surgeon Mary Edwards Walker who was arrested for wearing trousers, the stories are hugely varied but united by bravery and innovation.

'Each of these women has fought and won the kinds of victories that pave the way for progress for all of us,' Clinton says. 'To us, they are all gutsy women – leaders with the courage to stand up to the status quo, ask hard questions, and get the job done. This book is a continuation of a conversation Chelsea and I have been having since she was a little girl, and we are excited to welcome others into that conversation.'

Chelsea Clinton added: 'The gutsy women in this book share a fierce optimism that their work and lives will make a difference in the world. And, they’re right.'

Tickets for the talk range from £32 - £57 and include a copy of The Book of Gutsy Women. General booking opens on Friday 4 October: be prompt, because we predict a sellout.
