Requiem on BBC One and Netflix

Hide your children: the BBC's first horror TV show arrives with Requiem

Requiem, BBC One
When was the last time you watched a horror show on BBC One? Well, probably, never.

This new change in direction for the broadcasting corporation can perhaps be put down to the fact that Requiem, the horrifying new show arriving on Sunday, was created in partnership with Netflix.

Unfortunately, what you might find less surprising, is that the BBC's latest venture is about missing children – an obsession which gave us A Child in Time last year, Kiri on Channel 4 and The Cryalso on the BBC – which will arrive at some point this year.

Requiem arrives on Friday 2 February with the story of Matilda Gray, a gifted cellist, whose mother commits suicide in horrible circumstances twenty years after the disappearance of a toddler from a small Welsh village.

The six-part series takes inspiration from the psychological horror films of the late 1960s and ‘70s, movies such as Rosemary’s Baby, Don’t Look Now, and The Innocents. Expect plenty of uncertainty and ambiguity, an edge-of-your-seat soundtrack and recurring nightmares (theirs and yours).

Written by Kris Mrksa (episodes one to four and six) and Blake Ayshford (episode five), this is a grown-up horror drama with a strong female lead and plenty of reasons to hide yourself behind the sofa.

The whole series is available on BBC iPlayer
