ATOMIC 50 Time Travels in Tin, Waltham Forest London Borough of Culture 2019
Immersive theatre meets manufacturing history in Blackhorse Workshop's ATOMIC 50, which takes kids on a metalworking journey at Leyton Sports Ground.
ATOMIC 50 is a cool way of teaching kids Waltham Forest's tin-making history
Blackhorse Workshop's ATOMIC 50 Time Travels in Tin (so named because 50 is the number of protons in an atom of tin) is an immersive children's theatre experience-cum-workshop opening in the disused Leyton Sports Ground this April as part of Waltham Forest London Borough of Culture 2019.
Celebrating the area's rich manufacturing and tin work history (the borough used to house some of the top toy factories producing tin collectibles from the 1930s-1960s), children aged 7-11 will enter a "ghost factory," clocking in as workers before being led on an immersive historical manufacturing journey by performers. They'll learn about tin's history and role as a sustainable alternative to plastic, as well as create their own tin objects on a factory line to be part of a collective sculpture.
Created in collaboration with performance and visual artist Abigail Conway and set designer Soraya Gilanni Viljoen, this is an innovative way to introduce kids to some history, as well as cultivating their creative maker/craftsperson side - something they don't get to do often enough. Performances are 90 minutes and run throughout the day, from 10am-5pm.
Teens (16 and older) and adults will also be able to try their hand at metalworking with evening workshops, where you'll be making mini acoustic speakers from sheet metal and decorative tin plates.
