ConcertLab: Beethoven's 'Eroica', Oval Space

Walk in Beethoven's footsteps through an entire symphony, with Southbank Sinfonia, plus the voice of David Threlfall putting the composer's thoughts into words

Southbank Sinfonia make music for all the senses
Composition was a visceral, passionate and involving experience for Beethoven, and with Southbank Sinfonia playing, the listening experience can be intense and layered too.

In one of the orchestra's #ConcertLab immersive events, the audience can hear Beethoven's powerful Symphony No 3 from within the source of the music, moving freely between the instruments and letting the sound take over entirely.

Lee Reynolds conducts the performance, entitled The Sound Within at Oval Space, Bethnal Green. The voice of Shameless and RSC star David Threlfall will recall the words of the composer from his letters and writings, taking listeners deep inside the creative process. The performance will be British Sign Language interpreted too. The composer himself lost his hearing later in life.

Southbank Sinfonia trumpeter Erika Curbelo and french horn player Mate Tozser

Southbank Sinfonia is one of the most flexible and innovative orchestras in London, packed with young players with new ideas about the classics. And there will be more music after the main performance, at an after-party with bar until late.

The Symphony No 3 was composed in 1803-4, and originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, hence its heroic nickname, the Eroica. Beethoven later scratched out Napoleon's name, in order not to offend his aristocratic patron. But the mighty, striding themes conjure up heroism in all its forms, including personal struggles. Opening to mixed reviews, the Eroica is now one of the landmarks in musical history, bridging Classical and Romantic periods.

Bring out your comfy shoes and hear the Eroica as never before.
