The American choreographer Trisha Brown (1936-2017) is one of the key names of post-modern dance. Her entire career, either as a solo choreographer or in collaboration with others – she was one of the founders of the avant-garde Judson Dance Theatre, prior to founding her own Trish Brown Dance Company in 1970 – can be defined as an ongoing attempt to create radically new ways of moving.

Exactly how she did that is explored in Set and Reset/Unset, a demonstration that will run at Tate Modern until the end of August as part of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels. Put together in collaboration with Trisha Brown Dance Company, this is a series of informal performances exploring the core principles and processes Brown used in her choreography.

Set and Reset by Trisha Brown with Rambert, her major work of post-modern dance, will be performed for the first time by Rambert, the UK's premier contemporary dance company. With music by Laurie Anderson and sets and costumes by Robert Rauschenberg, this is a fluid, intricate, quite mesmerising piece that includes a measure of improvisation.

Set and Reset/Reset with Candoco Dance Company is a version of the above work created by Abigail Yager, a former member of Trisha Brown Dance Company, using Brown's own set of instructions. Candoco Dance Company , which includes disabled and non-disabled dancers, performed this work with great panache as part of its latest mixed bill at Sadler's Wells.

Finally, Set and Reset by Trisha Brown is an installation featuring the music and stage set of the original 1983 work, documentation of a performance, and Brown’s rarely seen videotapes that show her building and rehearsing the choreography with her dancers.
