Two concerts devoted to Schubert show the composer's range from tenderness and melancholy to playful exuberance

The pianist Mitsuko Uchida is noted for her playing of Mozart, but she brings her meticulous and luminous skills to another composer in a series of four Southbank Centre concerts over two years devoted to the Schubert.

Her first programme (28 Nov) will demonstrate the enormous range of colours of the German composer, whose melting melodies and rich harmonies make this journey through his works an exciting prospect, especially in the company of this inspiring soloist.

Uchida opens her first recital with the dramatic and fevered C minor Sonata D958. This is followed by the gentler, lyrical and intimate A major Sonata D664. After the interval the Sonata in G major D894 is a big adventure in its own right.

The second of Mitsuko Uchida's Schubert series (1 Dec) opens with the tuneful Sonata in B major, D.575 and is followed by the strong and challenging A minor Sonata D845, with its dream variations.

The dynamic D major Sonata D850 which ends this second recital is an unusually outgoing piece, funny, and dance-like.

The Schubert journey gives listeners a chance to hear this amazing pianist in these jewel-like and concentrated works without the flamboyance of orchestral accompaniment. The recital series continues next year.
