How to get the most out of Frieze Week London: 2022

The arrival of two colossal white tents in Regent’s Park – one housing Frieze London, the other Frieze Masters – usually hails the start of a frenzied autumn art season in the capital.

Frieze London will feature over 160 of the world’s leading contemporary galleries while Frieze Masters will feature over 120 galleries, showing work from ancient to modern.

Annual highlights include Frieze Sculpture, its temporary outdoor sculpture park in Regent’s Park. A trip to Mayfair to visit Frieze's space in Cork Street and the neighbouring private galleries is also recommended; exhibition openings, evening talks and events will be held throughout the week.

FRIEZE LONDON SHOWCASING LONDON'S CULTURAL LIFE AND GLOBAL REACH

This year's Frieze mission is to celebrate London's cultural life and global reach. Eva Langret, director of Frieze London, said: ‘Our participating gallery list reflects the city’s position as an international centre, bringing together some of the most exciting galleries, from major names to emerging spaces.'

Focus: Alongside the main section of the fair, Focus, dedicated to supporting young galleries established in the last 12 years, will present today’s most exciting emerging artists who explore themes of displacement and surveillance.

Indra's Net: Guggenheim Abu Dhabi curator Sandhini Poddar will curate this year’s Frieze special section: Indra’s Net, a term derived from Buddhist and Hindu thought. The section will feature 10 dedicated presentations, as well as a number of cabinet-style displays scattered throughout the main section of the fair.

BMW Lounge: Los Angeles-based artist Nikita Gale will present an immersive installation in the BMW Lounge at Frieze London, coinciding with the artist’s first UK solo exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery entitled In a Dream you Climb the Stairs, on view until Sunday 16 October.

Abbas Zahedi’s installation near Frieze London’s entrance: The 2022 Frieze Artist Award winner will realise an installation consisting of a wooden structure that will host a series of live activations, each of which will be broadcast, via a DIY radio, both online and at the fair. Zahedi will appear in conversation with Mariam Zulfiqar (director of Artangel) on Thursday 13 October, at 6pm GMT at No.9 Cork Street.

The installation, "Into the Maze" is a multimedia experience of geometric patterns, uses a technique called dazzle painting.
Rehberger creates a gravity-defying installation of disappearing images. Dizzying!

BOOTHS WE WILL BE VISITING AT FRIEZE LONDON

As it is almost impossible to see everything, here is a selection of Frieze London stands that we have earmarked:

• Jadé Fadojutimi will take over Gagosian’s booth. At just 29, Jadé is one of London's most exciting artists. She draws her inspiration from specific locations, cultures, objects, Japanese anime, clothing and soundtracks.

• French artist Laure Prouvost will stage a participatory presentation at the Lisson Gallery Booth.

• White Cube will be presenting works from Tracey Emin, Theaster Gates, Antony Gormley and Andreas Gursky.

• Pilar Corrias will stage a solo show of work by Kurdish artist Hayv Kahraman that continues her exploration of ‘otherness’, particularly in relation to the female body.

• Victoria Miro will hold a special presentation in tribute to Paula Rego, and present works from Chantal Joffe, Celia Paul, Milton Avery and Conrad Shawcross.
  
  
• Ingleby Gallery will showcase a striking painting of Caroline Walker’s Janet series, featuring the artist's mother.
  

• Thomas Dane Gallery’s booth will be curated by Anthea Hamilton and will include recent works by Hamilton, alongside major pieces by artists including Hurvin Anderson and Barbara Kasten.

• Stephen Friedman Gallery will present the first solo survey of Jeffrey Gibson in the UK, whose mixed-media paintings and sculptures combine indigenous artisanal handcraft with narratives of contemporary resistance, drawing on protest slogans and song lyrics.

• Lehmann Maupin will return with a three-artist presentation, bringing together work by Cecilia Vicuña, Teresita Fernández and Calida Rawles that asks us to consider connections – between individuals and cultures, landscape and lived experience, material and concept, and mind and body.

• Addis Fine Art will present Selome Muleta, one of the most celebrated female artists to emerge from the Ethiopian visual arts scene recently.

CORK STREET

Frieze No.9 Cork Street will launch three major solo shows:

On the ground-floor gallery space will be the first UK solo survey of London-born, New York-based conceptual artist James Nares, bringing together works across Nares’ five-decade career from the 1970s to the present.

Upstairs in Gallery 2 will be a solo presentation by Zoë Paul, entitled Shadows over the bright and darkened lands of the earth, showing a series of three large-scale bead curtains made from handmade stoneware, terracotta and porcelain depicting the forms of three naked figures suspended in motion.

Gallery 3 brings together a selection of new works by Los Angeles-based artists Mustafa Ali Clayton, Michelle Blade, Karon Davis and February James. Entitled The Air Upon You, the exhibition brings each artist’s explorations of the figurative into dialogue with one another.


Cork Street Galleries will remain open that night to participate in Frieze West End Night

Sonia Boyce OBE RA was chosen this year as the artist for Cork Street Galleries Banners Commission. She will be unveiling her work on Cork Street on Thursday 13 October that will remain on site for six weeks.
