'Let's end this bullsh*t': Royal Court Theatre event responds to Weinstein scandal

By Lucy Brooks on 17/10/2017

Vicky Featherstone leads the charge against sexual harassment in the entertainment industry with a day of sharing stories and taking action

Royal Court: No Grey area event to confront abuse of power in theatre industry
Royal Court: No Grey area event to confront abuse of power in theatre industry
'Following last week’s revelations concerning Harvey Weinstein it is time to confront the abuses of power that have been occurring in our own industry for years,' says artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre, Vicky Featherstone.

As the scope and scale of sexual harassment in the entertainment industry broadens with each new revelation, The Royal Court invites members of the public and theatre professionals to listen, learn and take action.

On Saturday 28 October the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs will be open from noon to 5pm for a sharing session. No Grey Area: Your Stories Heard gives anyone and everyone a space to speak openly without judgement. Just like the viral hashtag #MeToo, the event offers an unfiltered chance to explore the far-reaching and insidious nature of exploitation.

Stories can be submitted here (you may remain annoymous). Royal Court Associate Director Lucy Morrison will curate the accounts into a series of readings. The event is free to attend, no booking require.

From 2:30pm - 4pm in the Royal Court's Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, leading figures from across the theatre industry (and beyond) are invited to a Town Hall Meeting, where Vicky Featherstone will present a code of conduct and a new system of policies to protect against systemic abuse of power. This event is free but ticketed. Each person is limited to 2 tickets. Click here to book

'Having set up and led major arts organisations over the last 20 years I have always had very clear policies on how to manage such abuses of power and how to empower my staff to have the confidence in dealing with and reporting such issues,' Featherstone says.

'If it is not dealt with in an open way we have no hope of change, and change must happen.'

Hear, hear!
