Newly announced broadcast of Fidelio takes Beethoven's only opera to a wider audience, with an all-star cast

A heroic rescue is at the heart of Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio. And at Garsington Opera another heroic rescue has ensured that, while this year's season was cancelled, live and semi-staged performances of Fidelio will take place in September.


With a very small live audience, carefully spaced around the auditorium, tickets to the general public are available on a returns basis only. Click here to go on the mailing list.


But everyone can hear the opera: it is to be broadcast by BBC Radio 3 at 6:30PM on Saturday 26 September.


The mezzo-soprano Katherine Broderick sings Leonore, who talks her way into the prison where her political dissident husband is held. She assumes the name Fidelio – and is trusted by the jailor (Joshua Bloom). Taking advantage of this, she reaches her beloved Florestan, sung by tenor Toby Spence. A happy reunion is on the cards, but they are not out of danger yet...


Douglas Boyd conducts members of the Philharmonia Orchestra and Garsington Opera Chorus in Peter Mumford's semi-staged realisation of Beethoven's masterwork.


Small household groups will be allowed in the auditorium, further protected by screens especially designed for live performance, in a pioneering venture for Garsington.


Already available to view on demand is its delightful live concert Unmute. And next year's full season has already been announced. Step by step, opera returns to Garsington...
