The chefs and schools offering the best online cooking classes for adults

By Holly O'Mahony on 22/4/2020

A lockdown trait that unifies nearly all of us is a desire to develop our skills in the kitchen. A quick swipe through Instagram will confirm that half your friends are attempting to make their own pasta and the other half are offering step-by-step Instagram Live tutorials on how to copy their own (often not particularly exciting-looking) dinners. Why follow them when you can learn from some of the best chefs, bakers and even chocolatiers in the world?

One silver lining to the crisis is the skill sharing currently being offered up freely online, as we do what we can to stay connected while in isolation. This extends to the culinary world, where the likes of Jason Atherton, Tom Kerridge, Andrew Wong and a spate of other top chefs are teaching us how to make some of their signature recipes.

Whether or not there’s a Michelin-starred chef hiding within you, online cooking tutorials are a chance to make lockdown suppers a bit more exciting. The best bit? Most of them are free.

Officina 00

Officina 00

If you, like half of Instagram, have dusted off the pasta machine that’s been sitting in your attic for the past few years in the hope of using this downtime to master the art of rolling and cutting the perfect pasta, Old Street restaurant Officina 00 is here to help. Masterclasses are held on their Instagram Live channel, with the ingredients posted in advance. From spaghetti alla carbonara to fresh egg tagliolini with ‘aglio, olio, peperoncino’ sauce, follow along to see your home-cooked dinners get a whole lot more exciting. And if all goes belly up? Officina 00 is delivering expert takes on their signature dishes via Deliveroo and lesser-known delivery service Slerp.
