Born in fascist Italy and later a refugee from the Brazilian dictatorship in the late 60s, Anna Maria Maiolino is an artist whose life-long experience with exile and displacement heavily informs her oeuvre. She is known for her unsettling bodily works which provide a deeply personal map of her remarkable life, as well as a chronicle of Brazil's political history.

The long-awaited first UK retrospective of the South American artist comes to Whitechapel Gallery, bringing together 150 works, many on display in the UK for the first time. The exhibition will trace Maiolino's interest in simple materials such as clay which she often uses to evoke anatomical and intestinal imagery in order to comment on themes of repression and hunger. As well as sculpture, Maiolino also relays powerful political messages through performance and video works. On display will be her 1973 film In-Out Antropofagia (In-Out Anthropophagy) which depicts people's mouths being taped shut, smiling, or struggling to speak.

The highlight of the show will be Maiolino’s seminal performance piece Entrevidas (1981), a work which literalises the idiom 'walking on eggs shells' as performers have to navigate a minefield of eggs scattered across the gallery floor. This diverse multi-media exhibition will no doubt provide a fascinating and emotional look into Maiolino's checkered universe and is not to be missed.
