After an intensely challenging two years, the opening (or reopening) of an arts venue is worthy of some fuss. The Actors Centre in Covent Garden, which has remained closed since the start of the pandemic, has rebranded as the Seven Dials Playhouse. While the venue continues to be a space for creatives to develop work, the plan is for the theatre to become a leading performance venue.
Throwing open its doors this February, Seven Dials Playhouse launches with the European premiere of Mark Gerard’s 2015 play Steve, which debuted at New York's Pershing Square Signature Center, directed by Cynthia Nixon.
Through its titular character, an ageing actor and father, who's popular within his showbiz circle but struggling to make his mark in an increasingly young-looking industry, Steve examines the highs and lows of growing older with affection and humour.
The UK premiere stars David Ames (I Am Montana, The Arcola) as Steven and Jenna Russell (Guys and Dolls, Fun Home) as his long-term confidante Carrie, and is directed by Andrew Keates (Dark Sublime, Trafalgar Studio).
