Backstage comedy and chaos come to the Garrick Theatre as Jeremy Herrin's revival of Noises Off transfers after impressing at the Lyric Hammersmith.

Michael Frayn's 1982 farce is a play of three parts, or two plays for the price of one: first you watch an agonising rehearsal for a production of fictional play Nothing On, which is set to bring cheesy gags to every corner of England on an epic regional tour; then you see the production play out, but from the backstage perspective; finally you get the front of house perspective, as the play limps to the end of its tour with frazzled actors and broken scenery.

Frayn was inspired to write Noises Off after watching from the wings as Richard Briers and Lynn Redgrave stated a comedy called The Two of Us at the Garrick Theatre in 1970. Though the play itself was amusing, Frayn soon realised the true hilarity and tension was playing out behind the scenes.

It proved a winning premise for drama, with Noises Off fast becoming a comic favourite that is regularly revived and was adapted into a feature film in 1992.

This transfer to the Garrick Theatre will be the forth time the beloved play has graced the West End. Director Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall, All My Sons) and designer Max Jones more than do it justice in this lively new production and the cast reprise their roles after impressing in Hammersmith.

BAFTA-nominee Meera Syal plays Mrs Clackett, the housekeeper with a penchant for sardines. She's joined by Daniel Rigby (BBC Two’s Eric & Ernie and One Man, Two Guvnor) as Garry Lejeune/ Roger Tramplemain and Lloyd Owen (Monarch of the Glen) as visionary director Lloyd Dallas.
