Every tried to take children to the seaside? Maybe, in a moment of madness, you planned to bring a picnic and play games? And then you arrived. The sea was gentle, the sand was warm and the children ruined everything by fighting with each other, loosing the beachball and spitting that picnic out in horror? Then Jeramee, Hartleby and Oooglemore is the play for you.
Designed for little ones as young as three (although babies of any age are welcome), the Unicorn’s latest production by Gary Owen (writer) and experimental theatre maker Tim Couch (An Oak Tree, The National Theatre) is just as enjoyable for any adult who has ever suffered a day out with the kids.
Jeramy, Hartleby and Ooglemore can only communicate using their names. This doesn’t hamper Amalia Vitale as Hartleby, who is bossy, possessive of her lovely blue towel and visibly appalled when wide-eyed Ooglemore tumbles onto the beach and wants to share.
Fionn Gill as Ooglemore is the quintessential toddler: endearing vulnerable, utterly hopeless and in constant need of attention. He can’t manage his armbands without a struggle, can't take his coat off and must stand fearfully twisting his buttons and imploring Jeramee to help. He finds himself constantly in scrapes: being attacked by seagulls or conned into eating carrots by the savvy Hartleby.
Fortunately Dorian Simpson as Jeramee is there to help him, to dress him, to feed him, and to resolve any disputes regarding towels.
Although simple, Jeramy, Hartleby and Ooglmore is a triumph of wit, employing bombastic physical comedy that somehow also reflects the reality of how difficult it is to look after children. Last year, Culture Whisper gave the show four stars. We're looking forward to seeing it return.
Adults are invited to compliment the hilarity with a refreshing craft beer. There is also free live music in the foyer following the show.
