Stuck for ideas of what to do with your little ones this winter? The National Gallery is offering a variety of free hands-on art workshops so that families can fill the winter days with creative crafty fun.

Studio Sunday Workshops: Get inspired by the Gallery's exhibitions and get stuck in with these hands-on sunday studio workshops. Places for each are limited and allocated one hour before the event commences, so be sure to get there early to avoid disappointment. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

DREAM DESIGNS: Sunday 22 November, Pigott Education Centre Entrance, 11- 4pm (two sessions)
Guests will join artist Gayna Pelham to design the pillowcase of their dreams, inspired by the gallery's Raphael's dreaming knight.

HOWS MY HALO: Sunday 6 December, Pigott Education Centre Entrance, 11- 3:20pm (two sessions)
Perfectly angelic, budding artists make their own magnificent halo inspired by the radiant crowns of the gallery paintings.

FACE TO FACE: Sunday 13 December, Pigott Education Centre Entrance, 11- 4pm (two sessions)
New dimensions open up in this workshop that explores the play between the 2D and 3D faces in Titain's Portrait of a Lady and encourages visitors to try to make their own.

CHANGING PERSPECTIVES: Sunday 20 December, Pigott Education Centre Entrance, 11-3:20 (two sessions)
It's all about perspective, your young creatives are invited to create a landscape using the shapes and lines in Hobbema's famous Avenue of Middelharnis.

Festive Workshops: This festive holiday workshop is drop-in friendly, so while there may be a wait during busier times, there is no need to book.

RINGING BELL TOWERS: Monday 28-30 December, Room 38, 11-4 (two sessions)
This christmas season, families are invited to learn about the architecture painted in Canaletto's Stonemason's Yard and construct their own model bell tower, complete with actual ringing bells. Delightful.
All activities aimed at 5+, younger children are welcome to join in

We recommend nearby

  • Terroirs

The sort of wine bar/restaurant you never want to leave, this place has two separate floors depending on whether you fancy something bustling or more chilled. The French menu features both small plates and charcuterie alongside plats du jour that might include gilt head bream, monk’s beard, broad beans and rouille.

  • Rose Bakery

Another nice secret spot is Rose Bakery, at the top floor of Dover Street Market, for delicious quiche and desert. Tables are tiny and you'll have to fight your corner to get seats, between fashion people and wannabe curators.

  • Japan Centre

Once upon a time, the Japan Centre was just a small bookshop and café in Piccadilly Circus. However, recently it has seen some major expansions, and now has a number of different sites throughout London. Visit Japan Centre Panton Street just around the corner from Leicester Square to eat at its fantastic food court where you can sample a variety of Japanese delicacies. Then have a look around the shop to purchase some tasty snacks or ingredients to make your own dishes at home.
