Bridget Christie, Leicester Square Theatre 2016

After a flurry of five star reviews from Edinburgh, Bridget Christie's Because You Demanded It brings 'electrifying' jokes about Brexit to London

Bridget Christie: Because you Demanded it, London shows
If there's any bright side to Brexit, it's the rich material for comedy.

And if ever there was a comic with a grasp of the ridiculous and the political it's Bridget Christie. She's best known for deriding the idiocy of misogynistic marketing in A Bic For Her, and is leading the charge in making feminism and left wing issues riotously funny, without ever being preachy.

The laughs aren't limited to her stand-up: Christie writes a Guardian column, regularly appears on mainstream panel shows and most recently became best-selling author of A Book for Her.

This year's main stage Edinburgh show was supposed to explore themes of death and mortality. Unsurprisingly, after the Brexit hullabaloo and the subsequent domino effect in parliament, the whole musing on mortality thing 'didn't seem that interesting' to Christie .

So, months of planning and writing were abandoned for a quick-fire show rooted in the right here right now. Unlike the reams of other Fringe comedians going gung-ho on themes of idiot voters getting it wrong, Christie sharpens the narrative. She is too forlorn to discuss Britain's vote to leave the EU, she tells audiences, so promises to discuss horticulture instead. But, as the narrative tumbles along with characteristic spark, all jokes lead to Brexit.

If the jubilant reviews from the Edinburgh Fringe are to be believed, Because You Demanded It is Bridget Christie at her very best, delivering '…by some distance the most electrifying comedy I've seen yet on the Fringe', according reviewer.

Luckily for us Londoners the show comes to Leicester Square from September. We recommend booking fast — unless, of course, you voted leave. In which case you might have a sense of humour failure at the unashamedly panic-stricken response to the country we are becoming.
