The most affordable Michelin star restaurants

Cheap Michelin star restaurants in London are not just a myth. These five spots serve superlative three-course dinners for under £30

Leroy, Shoreditch

Taking the crown as the cheapest Michelin restaurant not just in London, but in the entire country, is Leroy in Shoreditch. As the brainchild of the team behind Ellory, Leroy offers a Parisian style menu with dishes including scallop in white wine sauce and confit rainbow trout. Talk about a bargain: a three course meal will cost an average of £23. If food isn't what you're looking for, it's also a wine bar where customers merely wanting to take a sip (or a bottle) are encouraged.

Brat, Shoreditch

Things are heating up at Brat. Tomos Parry’s approach to flame power ensures that the flavours of the locally sourced beef and fish sing. The famed turbot which lends the restaurant’s name is extremely pricey, but if you don’t want to splash the cash, three courses will rack up just £26.

Kitchen W8, Kensington

Michelin star restaurants conjure up images of unattainable sophistication: white tablecloths on which one indulges on prim and proper fine dining. Kensington restaurant Kitchen W8 looks exactly like that, but doesn’t come with the hefty bill that usually follows. At an affordable £29.50, Kitchen W8’s three course dinner set menu includes appetising delights such as broccoli and crispy squid, glazed shoulder of lamb and a bitter chocolate pavé for dessert.

The Ninth, Fitzrovia

The French-Mediterranean style restaurant in Fitzrovia from Japanese chef Jun Tanaka brings a casual atmosphere to fine dining. With minimalist decor, The Ninth provides an intimate space that doesn’t detract from its mouthwatering seasonal menu of local offerings and specialties. We said: 'The Ninth easily joins join the ranks of high-end Fitzrovia restaurants, and the culinary gems that litter neighbouring Goodge Street.'

St. John, Clerkenwell

Located near Smithfield Market, St. John respects the site where it stands, with little changed from the building’s past life as a smokehouse. For those with an adventurous palate, the restaurant offers meals on the more peculiar side of the meaty spectrum from pig’s ear to smoked eel. Despite its delicacies, St. John requires no painful sacrifices when it comes to the bill: a three course meal averages at £29.10.
