Martin Sturfält plays Bach – with a Scandi twist, St John's Smith Square
Bach, Brahms and Liszt meet newer Scandanavian music in a piano recital by a London-trained Swedish soloist
Martin Sturfält trained in London and now lives in his native Sweden
Swedish-born pianist Martin took up the piano at the age of four, and trained both in Stockholm and here in London at the Guildhall School
of Music and Drama, with the sought-after teachers Paul Roberts and
Ronan O’Hora.
By the age of 11 he was giving regular concerts, and has played throughout his native Sweden as well as at London’s Purcell Room, Barbican Hall, Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall, across the rest of Europe and the USA. After 10 years in London, he now lives in the Swedish countryside, where his non-musical spare time activities include bee-keeping and gardening.
You can get to know this remarkable pianist better when he appears in the Blüthner Piano Series at St John’s, Smith Square, giving an imaginative programme inspired by the music of JS Bach – but with a Scandi twist.
Martin's connections to Blüthner – the Rolls Royce of pianos (and in some hands also the Porsche...) – go back to 2002, when he won the Malmö Nordic Blüthner Piano Competition. His programme in London combines the inspiring inventiveness of Bach, which underpins all Western music, with music by the Swedish composer Anders Nilsson and the Danish Carl Nielsen, as well as Bach adapted by later composers, including the virtuoso Hungarian Liszt.
Nilsson's Chaconne was written for Martin Sturfält, who also plays Brahms's rarely heard and musically daring Gigues, written in response to the young composer's first contact with Bach's French Suites in his early twenties.
Lovers of Bach and those who like to investigate newer music will be equally happy at this concert, which also demonstrates the impact that music training in London can have worldwide.
