Christmas Oratorio, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Festival Hall,

An uplifting work for Christmas that brings together six seasonal cantatas into a joyous and illuminating whole

Vladimir Jurowski will bring out the drama of Bach's Christmas Oratorio
Across the 12 days of Christmas 1734, in churches in Leipzig, the six elements of JS Bach's great Christmas Oratorio were performed for the first time. Now gathered into one whole depiction of the Christmas story, they are full of the challenges and resilience not only of the holy family, but that come into every human life.

Beginning with the Nativity, the oratorio recounts the visits of the shepherds and the magi, the naming of Jesus and the flight into Egypt. With its vivid picture of dispossessed people, the Christmas Oratorio has many resonances for today. This performance marks the end of the Belief and Beyond Belief events at Southbank Centre through 2017.

London Philharmonic Orchestra principal conductor Vladimir Jurowski is joined by distinguished soloists: Swedish soprano Maria Keohane, German mezzo-soprano Anke Vondung, British tenor Andrew Staples, and German bass-baritone Stephan Loges.
