Prom 58: Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Royal Albert Hall

The Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra is one of the most prestigious visiting orchestras appearing at the Proms

Actor Charles Dance narrates in Lincoln Portrait, which combines the president's words with the music of Aaron Copland
The sixth oldest orchestra in the United States, the world-famous Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1895. Despite its modest, provincial beginnings, and enriched in its early days by the arrival from Germany of many fine musicians, it is now one of the most acclaimed orchestras in the world.

Under its charismatic conductor Louis Langree, the Cincinatti appears at the Proms for the very first time in the concert series 120-year-plus history, a musical landmark indeed.

Fittingly, it opens its Proms debut concert with two pieces by American composers, First up is Leonard Bernstein’s symphonic suite On The Waterfront, a concert version of his score for Elia Kazan’s classic movie of the same name, starring Marlon Brando. It fell to the young composer to put into music the danger and desolation of the docks.

It is followed by Aaron Copland’s tribute to a president, Lincoln Portrait, a musical response and complement to the words from the great orator’s speeches. Games of Thrones actor Charles Dance is the narrator.

The second half of the programme is devoted to the ever-popular Tchaikovsky Symphony No 5, the Russian composer’s most patriotic work, whose many melodies make reference to other Russian music. A live, explosive performance is always an event, and this evening promises to be especially dynamic.
