Travel skincare & beauty essentials by the frequent flyers who use them

By Sarah Joan Ross on 13/7/2022

We’ve asked some skincare and beauty-minded frequent flyers what they take on board to pamper themselves at 33,000 feet. So even though travel might be in disarray, at least when you eventually board your flight, it's an oasis of calm, and a wholly beautifying experience.

1. Dr Sophie Shotter, Medical Director and founder of Illuminate Skin Clinics

La Roche Posay Toleraine Ultra 8 Face Mist, £15.60 'I like to spritz this regularly during the flight to boost hydration.'

Meder Beauty HydraFill Mask, £61 'I love to be one of those weirdos who sit with a sheet mask on, and this one supercharges my hydration levels but also doesn't slide around.'

Finally, Oto CBD Hand Balm, £23.20 'I find my hands get dehydrated quickly on board too, and this balm is nourishing but not greasy.'

'I love Chanel No.1 de Chanel, Powder-To-Foam Cleanser, £42 – it's the perfect cleanser, gentle and deliciously foamy and non-liquid, so perfect to put in your hand luggage when you travel.'

3. Sara Herandi, Founder & CEO - Deja

'I try to avoid aeroplane food as it's so unhealthy and high in salt, but sometimes it's unavoidable. Even if you don't eat it, flying can make you bloated, so I never travel without my Deja Rest & Digest Capsules, £35. They are digestion supplements, that contain a blend of Ayurvedic herbs like triphala and ginger to help improve digestion and fennel and carom seeds to reduce bloating.

'Also, a silk eye mask as I need to block out the light to sleep well, and the silk material is better at preventing wrinkles than a regular cotton one, as the skin around the eye area is so delicate.

'And finally, a sustainable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the flight without using many plastic bottles! I have some from S'well.'

'Firstly, I spray strategic touch-points with a beautifully scented sanitiser. Zenatt Luxury Hand Cleanser, £24, It ensures my space smells like a spa or wafts the aroma of flowers rather than that fusty old plane stench.

'Hair goes up in a silk scrunchie or Invisibobble, and then I use a rich cream to create a barrier between my skin and the dry cabin atmosphere, like La Mer, £65 or Weleda Skin Food, £13.50 (plus a layer of SPF if it's a day flight), and don cashmere socks and blanket for cosiness.

'Universkin M Peptides Serum Spray (£POA) ensures my skin is hydrated and calm during the flight. In addition, the spray makes it easier to avoid cross-contamination with hands.

'Tons of water!

'When it comes to food, fibre bars and avoid too many carbs; you will spend the entire holiday feeling bloated!'

'Oils that hydrate my skin and are easy to use. I love Sunday Riley's CEO Glow.

'I also find that my lips get chapped, so I use Esho Coat which hydrates my lips and keeps them looking smooth.

'Being a dentist, having fresh breath is key. So I'm also one of the co-founders of PÄRLA toothpaste tabs, £7: the eco-friendly solution to toothpaste tubes.'

'Flight socks to avoid swelling even after the shortest flight and a pashmina to keep warm. A bulldog hair clip ensures my hair is neat once I step off the plane. And beauty? My products are: Rodial Hydrating Face Mask, £12; Sisley Hand Cream, £70 and Essie Cuticle Oil, £9.99.
