Ringo Starr joined the biggest rock band in British history by a twist of fate when he replaced drummer Pete Best in 1962. Ever since, Starr has ridden the crazy Beatles ride and weathered breakups, success and songwriting. In a new display at the National Portrait Gallery, Ringo Starr reveals rare and unseen photographs of his childhood and the glory years of Britain's most famous musical group.

While photographers followed the band and documented their rise to fame, Starr explains that, ‘these are shots that noone else could have taken. Together they chart the story of four lads from Liverpool trying to live normal lives amidst the frenzy that surrounded them'.
Visitors can even pick up a piece of the magic in the gift shop with prints for sale and Starr's new book, Photography by Ringo Starr. So if you have Beatles songs like She Loves You and I Wanna Hold Your Hand still swirling around you head from the swinging '60s, relive the glory years when four Liverpudlian boys made the big time at this National Portrait Gallery exhibition.
