Although Andersson has gained a reputation in the art world as somewhat of a maverick – Andersson has steered clear of blue-chip galleries including Hoxton's White Cube in favour of more off-beat venues – his portraits remain surprisingly traditional and appealing. They are, more often than not, mournful and shocking, yet tender and sensitive.
Andersson's CV is impressive, to say the least.
After graduating from Central St. Martins in 2008, Johan Andersson became the youngest artist to be shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award, winning third prize for his portrait Tamara. Following this success, he was subsequently named First in The Independent's top 20 Artists in 2008.
At the tender age of 31, he has already exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, the V&A, and the Saatchi Gallery.
If that wasn't enough, he has also co-founded Art Unified, the LA based gallery that currently represents him internationally.
