Where to find the best pancakes: London, 2022
Hankering for dutch babies, hoppers or okonomiyaki? Here's our list of the best places in London for the most interesting pancakes from around the world.
Hoppers – pancakes made from fermented rice and coconut milk batter that are popular in southern India and Sri Lanka – proved such a hit in Soho that the team behind the restaurant of the same name has gone on to open further branches in Marylebone and King's Cross. Indian actress and food writer Madhur Jaffrey describes hoppers as the love-child of a crêpe and a crumpet, which pretty much sums up why they are so appealing. The bowl-shaped pancakes have a crater-like spongy base. They're usually cooked with an egg broken in, which gives them a lovely filigree look when served.
Alongside hoppers and dosas, order mutton rolls, shrimp chips and karries, besides interesting cocktails inspired by Sri Lankan herbs.
