In adapting the legendary Powell/Pressburger film The Red Shoes for the stage four years ago Matthew Bourne created a powerful, engaging work of dance theatre, which instantly won over audiences, garnered a raft of four- and five-star reviews, and proceeded to win two Olivier Awards.

Danced by his New Adventures company, the film of Bourne's The Red Shoes was to be released in cinemas nationwide earlier this year, but it too fell victim to the Covid-19 lockdown. Now, however, we have a firm date for its release throughout the UK and Ireland: Wednesday 30 September.

The cast is led by Ashley Shaw as the ill-fated heroine Victoria Page, with former Royal Ballet principal Adam Cooper – who created the role of The Swan/Stranger in Bourne's landmark Swan Lake – as her Svengali and ultimate destroyer Boris Lermontov.

Directed for the screen by Ross MacGibbon, Bourne's The Red Shoes is set to music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann, with gorgeous designs by Bourne's regular collaborator Lez Brotherston.

  • Gazelle

Walking into Gazelle is like entering a private members' club, discreetly signed, upstairs in an Edwardian Mayfair building with its own elevator. It is perfectly possible to dip inside for pre-dinner cocktail. For a post-dinner moody tryst it is most inviting too.
